In March 1896 Freud first applied the term “Psychical Analysis” to the treatment he was offering to his disturbed patients. Within the next decade he was to publish two works which between them encompassed a new vision of human experience and, some would argue, reshaped the consciousness of the Western World: The lnterpretation of Dreams and The Three Essays on Sexuality. What the following ninety-two years have made clear is that, despite many misconceptions, psychoanalysis is a living, developing field of study. Drawing on Freud’s genius, it continues to evolve new models in the light of clinical experience and defies tidy definition or conceptualization.
